The Congress currently has its lowest approval ratings in U.S. history (11%). Congress has lost touch with Americans and people have lost faith in Congress to solve the problems and issues so vital to our lives. Citizens dislike and distrust Washington because it has strayed so far from government’s mission to the American people as outlined by our founding fathers in the Preamble to the United States Constitution. Congress faces a tremendous challenge in restoring our faith in the federal government.
Preamble to the United States Constitution We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. |
When you examine government, it’s doing many things it shouldn’t be (like needlessly interfering with our lives and pocketbooks) and failing to accomplish the vital tasks for which the federal government was formed in the first place.
- Establish justice: While civil and criminal justice is primarily regulated on the state and local level, constitutional doctrines are more designed to protect criminals rather than victims.
- Insure domestic tranquility: Partisan bickering and gridlock in Washington have severely polarized our country. While there are thankfully no massive riots in the street, our citizens are upset and disgusted with Washington.
- Provide for the common defense: Americans feel more vulnerable today to attacks from abroad and within that at any time in modern history. As we know, when we really needed our military after Katrina, they were very late in arriving.
- Promote the general welfare: The only contact that most citizens have with the federal government is on April 15th when the send in their tax returns.
Government has been unable to fulfill important promises to citizens such as providing affordable health care and ensuring that social security will be there for those who paid in to it all of their lives. - Secure the blessings of liberty : The monstrous bureaucracy has only served to stifle liberty rather than enhance it. We will experience true liberty as envisioned by our founders when we are able to get government off of our back and out of our wallet.
